State-of-the-art Report on Natural Gas as a Motor Fuel

Summary

The objectives of Task 6 are to collect, analyze and synthesize intemational information and experience about the present and future use of natural gas as a motor fuel. The project includes the use of compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) in light duty vehicles (LDV's) and heavy duty vehicles (HDV's). The potential of methane produced from biomass (biogas) is also explored.

The result of the Task 6 work has been published in a book, "Methane as Motor Fuel".

A) Supply and demand of natural gas - reserves and resources

  • trade patterns and transportation
  • distribution systems in major geographical areas
  • refuelling stations, including home compressors, technology and costs
  • market demand and prices
  • potential supply, processing and marketing of biogas

B) Utilization in vehicles

  • Otto engine vehicles
  • Diesel engine vehicles

C) Environment, Health and Safety

  • emissions and safety in extraction transportation, distribution, refuelling and vehicle operation
  • regulated emissions including non-methane, hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxides, etc
  • carbon dioxide and other greenhouse effects of natural gas and biogas
  • accident results

D) Economic and Socioeconomic

  • transportation and distribution costs
  • utilization costs
  • system costs
  • national security
  • balance of payments
  • employment
  • social benefits and costs
  • taxation, legislation and regulation
  • institutional and industry barriers

E) Strategies for Implementation

  • research and development
  • legislation, taxation

The project will assist IEA member countries in choosing national strategies for replacing motor fuels in whole or in part by natural gas and will outline reconunendations for relevant national approaches.
